Serving as State Comptroller since 2007, his responsibilities include: auditing the spending practices of State agencies and local governments; managing the third largest pension fund in the United States; overseeing the New York State & Local Retirement System; providing objective analysis of the New York State and New York City budgets; maintaining the State's accounting records; reviewing and approving billions of dollars of proposed State contracts and spending; administering the State's payroll; returning unclaimed funds to their rightful owners; and promoting effectiveness, efficiency and ethics in State and local government.
